Course Outline: Baseball Batting

Course Outline: Baseball Batting

Session 1: The Load and Timing

Focus: Establishing rhythm and weight transfer via the leg kick.

Key Concept: The leg kick times the approach to the pitcher.

Drill 1 (Shadow Swings with Leg Kick): Perform 20 shadow swings focusing solely on a high leg kick that loads weight onto the back leg. Pause briefly at the peak of the load to ensure balance.

Drill 2 (Strided Holds): Step out with your stride leg and hold the position for 3 seconds. Focus on keeping your hands back and your head still while your lower body loads.

Goal: Smooth, rhythmic motion without rushing to the ball.

Session 2: Rotation and Bat Speed

Focus: Generating speed through controlled stride and rotation.

Key Concept: Drive rotation, mimicking the efficient stride of elite hitters.

Drill 1 (Resistance Band Rotation): Attach a resistance band to a sturdy post. Hold the bat handle and rotate against the resistance, focusing on keeping your arms relaxed.

Drill 2 (Tee Work – Half Swings): Hit off a tee using only 50% power. Focus on rotating the hips through the ball while keeping the hands loose. Listen for the "crack" of the bat, not the effort of the swing.

Goal: Fast bat speed without tension.

Session 3: Barrel Path and Leverage

Focus: Shortening the swing to the ball and elevating through impact.

Key Concept: Keep the swing path short to the ball and hit up through the impact zone to drive the ball upward.

Drill 1 (High Tee Work): Raise the tee slightly so you are hitting the top half of the ball. Focus on hitting up on the ball to create lift.

Drill 2 (Loose Hands Drill): Hit soft toss or off a tee focusing entirely on keeping wrists loose. Let the barrel whip through the zone naturally rather than pushing with the arms.

Goal: Consistent contact on the upper half of the ball with a whip-like bat path.

Session 4: Extension and Finish

Focus: Releasing the top hand and extending through the hitting zone.

Key Concept: Letting go of the top hand after contact ensures full extension and prevents cutting the swing short.

Drill 1 (One-Handed Swings): Hold the bat with only your top hand. Swing through the zone, focusing on extending the arm fully and releasing the bat naturally at the finish.

Drill 2 (Follow-Through Holds): Hit balls off a tee or soft toss, but hold your finish position for 2 seconds after contact. Check that your top hand is releasing and your chest is facing the pitcher.

Goal: Full extension through contact with a balanced, open finish.

Session 5: Putting It All Together

Focus: Combining load, rotation, and extension into one fluid motion.

Key Concept: Integrate the lower body load, fast rotation, and complete extension for maximum power.

Drill 1 (Live Batting Practice): Hit off a tee or soft toss, focusing on the entire sequence: load → rotate → extend.

Drill 2 (Offense/Defense Drill): Focus on maintaining form under slight pressure.

Goal: A powerful, repeatable swing that combines all elements seamlessly.

Harvey Dorfman’s Approach to Baseball Psychology: Transforming the Mental Game

Harvey Dorfman was a trailblazing figure in the world of sports psychology, best known for his work in Major League Baseball ( MLB). His groundbreaking approach to the mental side of the game transformed how athletes, coaches, and teams approached performance, pressure, and personal development. Dorfman’s methods helped players harness the power of their minds to maximize their physical talents — a philosophy that remains highly influential in sports psychology today. A Pioneer in Mental Conditioning Harvey Dorfman began his career as a teacher and counselor before transitioning into sports psychology in the 1980s. He first made a name for himself with the Oakland Athletics and later with the Florida Marlins and other MLB teams. At a time when mental training was still a fringe concept in professional sports, Dorfman championed the idea that the mind is just as important as the body in determining athletic success. Dorfman wasn’t a traditional sports psychologist with a focus on th...

The Importance of Effective Union Negotiations and Stakeholder Analysis

Stakeholder analysis is a fundamental process that identifies the key players involved in or affected by a project. It helps in determining who should be surveyed through primary research. These stakeholders can include owners, employees, customers, suppliers, competitors, regulatory bodies, and governments. Understanding their interests and the potential impact on them is vital for successful project outcomes. Organizational Stakeholders: Internal parties such as employees and management. Economic Stakeholders: External parties with direct links, like suppliers and customers. Societal Stakeholders: External parties with indirect links, such as the community and environmental groups. Researchers need to assess the importance of each stakeholder, select those needed for the study, and evaluate the impact from various stakeholder options. Identifying and prioritizing stakeholders helps minimize external pressures and maximize support and resources. Primary and Secondary Data Collectio...
